As a believer of the Good News of Jesus, I find this passage significant in my journey of faith. I infer from these verses that Jesus had many disciples at this time. A disciple is likened to a student. Apparently, Jesus decided that the time was right to select and turn loose a few of his top students and called them to be apostles. An apostle is considered a messenger. The 12 men chosen were deemed ready to carry forth the message Jesus had come to earth to deliver, the Good News of eternal life, joy, and peace.
I wonder if God wants us all to graduate to be apostles. Does it frustrate Jesus if we remain lifelong students, never getting outside of the classroom of the church? I don't believe that salvation depends on being an apostle. I believe disciples will inherit heaven through faith in Jesus. However, am I missing out in greater rewards of peace and joy by not stepping out into the world around me as an apostle? My gut tells me, the answer is yes.
